چکیده

Pattern formation in different systems has attracted a growing attention in these last years. In the field of optics, transverse profiles of propagating beams have been investigated since the first studies on interference and diffraction. This initial interest was raised to a new level by the growing importance of nonlinear effects that could be observed with high intensity beams, typically laser light. In an extended nonlinear medium, above a certain threshold, the uniform intensity becomes unstable and the space-time distribution splits into domains that can be correlated on a long range (patterns) or on a short range (localized structures, space-time chaos). The attention has been focussed on two main groups of systems: active and passive systems. Active optical devices are those in which the medium is in an excited state and it can transfer energy to the light field, whereas passive optical devices are those in which the medium is in its ground state. In the case of active optics the systems investigated are large Fresnel number lasers, photorefractive and parametric oscillators. In passive optics, the simplest system one can think of consists of a laser beam propagating in a nonlinear optical medium. A great impulse to systematic investigation of patterns in passive optics was given nonlinear materials contained in optical cavities. A good compromise between simplicity of theoretical treatment and feasibility of experimental

We discuss the role of nonlocal interactions in determining the mechanisms of pattern formation and selection in a nonlinear system formed by a Liquid Crystal Light Valve inserted in an optical feedback loop. We present experimental results, and compare them with the predictions of a linear stability analysis of the equations governing the system. Nonlocality is introduced in the system via a l...

Crucial effects of the anisotropy on optical field induced pattern formation in nematic liquid crystal films.

We present here the crucial effects of material anisotropy on optical field induced pattern formation in the one-feedback-mirror arrangement which utilizes the nematic liquid crystal film as the nonlinear medium. By using the quasi-static electric-field-biased planar-aligned homogeneous nematic liquid crystal (NLC) films, we observe both the hexagon and the roll patterns which can be switched o...

X-ray imaging with amorphous selenium: theoretical feasibility of the liquid crystal light valve for radiography.

A novel radiographic imaging system based on a liquid crystal light valve is described. A liquid crystal light valve is a photon addressed spatial light modulator that consists of a high resolution, solid-state electrostatic detector (photoconductor) and an electro-optic light modulator (liquid crystal cell) physically coupled in a sandwich structure. We propose a light valve with a thick, x-ra...

Spatial soliton pairs in an unbiased photovoltaic-photorefractive crystal circuit

: Optical separate spatial dark and bright soliton pairs in steady-state case in one dimension, for a series circuit consisting of two-photon photorefractive (PR) crystal are investigated. Each crystal can be supported the spatial soliton, and at least one must be photovoltaic. The two solitons are known collectively as separate spatial soliton pairs with dark–dark, bright–dark and bright–brigh...

Dynamic and static position control of optical feedback solitons.

We report on the experimental implementation of an external control for optical feedback solitons using incoherent spatial intensity distributions in a liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) optical single feedback system. The external control provides excellent experimental possibilities for static and dynamic control of the lateral positions of the optical feedback solitons which will be demonstra...
